In Breeding and General Care
Hi, I am fairly new to medaka. I have kept fancy goldfish, guppies and swordtails in large pot ponds (200 litres plus each) for several years with water lilies and other plants in them. It has gone very well but we have had a few very cold winters (well cold for the Gold Coast, Queensland) which led to quite a few guppy deaths, so I am looking to phase out of them and into rice fish which tolerate the cold better. Anyway, I started with 5 platinium rice fish, and then in one pot added 5 of the orange rice fish. Because of the colour of the water which is quite green with algae at the moment (it will get clear by itself), it is hard to see more than 2 of either colour at a time, so it is possible that a few have been lost to predation from birds but I cant be sure. They are breeding madly at the moment, there are literally dozens of fry swimming around in the pot, some are orangish, some look as though they will be platinum, some are darker. But here is the weird thing - I can see a few jet black adult fish in there, and one purple-ish coloured fish. They are more rounded than the torpedo shaped rice fish I bought, but they are definitely not guppies or swordtails, so they could only be the store bought rice fish if they had changed colour and shape (which sounds bizarre but would explain why I dont see many of them at a time), or the offspring, which would be odd because I kept a pretty close eye on the pot and didnt see fry until recently (last 2 weeks). Any thoughts?
